Box Score 4 MESA, Ariz. – The Benedictine University baseball team opened the season with the Coach Calderone Classic and had a successful tournament, winning 3 out of 4 games. Benedictine picked up the first win against Taylor University defeating the Trojans, 3-2.
The Redhawks went on to defeat Panhandle State, 11-1, but were unable to pull off the comeback against College of Idaho falling to the Yotes, 13-10. The Redhawks closed the classic with a win on Saturday night against Kansas Wesleyan, 6-3.
GAME ONE (BEN 3, TU 2) BenU added one quick run in the bottom half of the first inning capitalizing on a hit from Josh Hernandez to get an early lead. The Redhawks would score again in the third on a sac fly from Orlando Lorduy to score Kevin Fitzgerald.
Taylor would be held scoreless until the fifth inning, scoring two runs to tie the game, but would fall short by a single run, 3-2 as the Redhawks earned the victory.
Starting pitcher Kameron Haviland earned his first win of the season, allowing just two runs and four hits across five innings, walking two while striking out eight.
Two BenU relievers combined to allow no runs, no hits, walking two, and striking out six, with senior Izaak Varela closing out the game. Reece Dexter threw for three innings in relief.
GAME TWO (BEN 10, COI 16) The Redhawks scored first but gave up three runs in the top of the second to the Yotes. The Redhawks answered tying the game at 4 apiece before taking a 7-4 lead in the fourth. The Yotes scored 12 runs in the 7th. 8th. And 9th frames to secure the win over BenU.
Orlando Lorduy led the Redhawks going 3-for-4 with 3 RBI and 4 runs scored.
The Redhawks combined for 16 runs on 14 hits, walking 6 batters and striking out 15.
GAME THREE (BEN 11, OPS 1) BenU starter Jared Cruce earned the win, throwing six innings and allowing three hits and no runs, walking one and striking out seven.
The Redhawks offense totaled 11 runs off of 14 hits. BenU left 7 on base, struck 5 times, and had one walk. Kevin Fitzgerald, Orlando Lorduy, Daniel Miranda, Ryan Curran (2) and Dylan Bangs all finished with a double. Josh Hernandez had the only triple for the Redhawks.
