The Benedictine Mesa Men's Volleyball Team put on a commanding performance, sweeping Cornerstone in straight sets (25-20, 25-18, 25-17).
Set 1:Â Benedictine opened the match with a kill from
Josh Beymer off a set by
John Jakaitis, setting the tone early. Cornerstone kept pace, with Ernest Broaster delivering a powerful response, but the Redhawks maintained composure. After falling behind 5-2 due to early errors, Benedictine found its rhythm, with
Trevor Weinert and
Landon Fuller leading the charge. A service ace from
Dapre Rogers tied the set at 6-6, and from there, the Redhawks took control.
A surge midway through the set, highlighted by key kills from Rogers and Fuller, pushed Benedictine ahead 18-15. Despite a late push from Cornerstone, Benedictine's dominance at the net—facilitated by Jakaitis—secured the set. Fuller closed it out with a clutch service ace for a 25-20 win.
Set 2:Â Benedictine carried its momentum into the second set, capitalizing on early errors from Cornerstone and jumping out to a 4-1 lead. Weinert and Rogers continued to apply pressure, forcing a Cornerstone timeout at 14-8 after a service ace from Fuller.
Cornerstone attempted to rally, but Benedictine's balanced attack—featuring Rogers, Fuller, and Beymer—kept them in control. Down the stretch, service errors from Cornerstone proved costly, and a kill from Rogers brought up set point at 24-18. A final attack error by Cornerstone sealed the set for Benedictine at 25-18.
Set 3:Â Benedictine dominated the final set, overcoming an early 2-0 deficit with a kill from Rogers and a key block by Weinert and Fuller. Jakaitis added a kill to push Benedictine ahead 3-2, and from there, the Redhawks never looked back.
A series of kills from Rogers, Fuller, and
Chris Kissling, combined with errors from Cornerstone, allowed Benedictine to extend its lead to 18-9. Despite a few late points from Cornerstone, the Redhawks stayed in control, with Rogers and Fuller delivering decisive kills to secure the 25-17 victory and complete the sweep.
