The Benedictine Mesa Men's Volleyball team closed out the regular season in dominant fashion, sweeping OUAZ in three sets. Final scores were 25-21, 25-20, 25-16.
Set 1
In a competitive opening set, Benedictine rallied late to secure a 25-21 win. OUAZ started strong with early kills from Corey Johnson and a service ace by Johnathan Worden to jump ahead 3-1. Benedictine responded with steady defense and key kills from Landon Fuller and Trevor Weinert, evening the score at 5-5.
OUAZ briefly pulled ahead 9-5 following a service ace from Jef Jamandron and a few Benedictine errors. But the Redhawks stormed back behind Fuller's powerful swings and sharp setting from John Jakaitis, taking their first lead at 14-13. From there, Benedictine's blocking duo of Josh Beymer and Dapre Rogers controlled the net during a crucial 6-1 run that extended the lead to 20-15.
OUAZ pushed back with late kills from Worden and Horatio Maumasi, but Benedict stayed composed. Fuller closed out the set with his fifth kill to give the Redhawks a 1-0 lead.
Set 2
Benedict carried the momentum into the second set, jumping out to a 4-0 lead behind a kill and service ace from Rogers. OUAZ struggled with consistency, committing several early errors that allowed Benedictine to pull away.
Fuller remained a force at the net, while Jakaitis kept the offense flowing smoothly. A strong block from Beymer pushed the lead to 10-4, prompting an early timeout from OUAZ. Even after the break, Benedict maintained control as Rogers and Fuller continued to deliver on offense.
Weinert added a crucial service ace and kill to keep the pressure on. A late ace from Fuller made it 22-13, and although OUAZ mounted a brief rally, Rogers ended the set with his fifth kill to secure a 25-20 win and a 2-0 match lead.
Set 3
The Redhawks dominated the third and final set, closing out the match with a 25-16 win. After a service error gave OUAZ the opening point, Benedictine took over, racing to a 6-2 lead thanks to early kills from Fuller and Weinert, along with multiple OUAZ errors.
A timeout couldn't slow Benedictine's momentum. Beymer and Fuller were relentless at the net, while Jakaitis continued to deliver pinpoint sets. Rogers and Weinert contributed key kills as the Redhawks pushed the score to 20-14. Beymer added a service ace, and Weinert finished off the sweep with the match-winning kill, assisted by Jakaitis.
