The Benedictine University Mesa men's soccer team continued its strong start to the season on Tuesday night, earning a 2-0 road victory over Nelson University Arizona.
After a scoreless first half, the Redhawks broke through in the 63rd minute when Athanasiou Athanasios found the back of the net off an assist from Ryder Skolka to give BENU a 1-0 advantage. Just 91 seconds later, Jack Jackson doubled the lead, finishing a pass from Ben Whomersley in the 65th minute to put the Redhawks firmly in control.
Benedictine outshot Nelson University 12-10 and held the hosts scoreless for the full 90 minutes. Athanasios and Coert Doorn each recorded two shots, while Jackson scored on his lone shot of the match. Athanasios' goal proved to be the game-winner and his second shot of the night later struck the post as the Redhawks continued to apply pressure in the second half.Â
Defensively, the Redhawks were organized throughout the contest, limiting Nelson University to no shots on goal. Goalkeeper Rafael Machado was credited with the shutout as Benedictine secured its fifth victory of the season.
