Box Score SURPRISE, Ariz. – The Benedictine Mesa women's basketball team defeated Ottawa-AZ, 76-69, on Friday November 4th at Faith Arena. The win over the Spirit is the first win of the season and the first win for head coach RaShawn Calvert as a Redhawk.
The Spirit got on the board first, but the Redhawks tied the game up at 4-4 and went on a 7-0 run before the Spirit would score again. The Redhawks would keep the lead through the quarter finishing with a 20-11 advantage. The Redhawks went into the second quarter holding the lead with the largest lead being 14 points at the 5-minute mark. The Spirit answered with an 11-0 run to narrow the lead going into half time.
The Redhawks led 35-31 to start the third, but the Spirit tied the game at 37 apiece to add pressure on the Redhawks defense. The Redhawks were able to answer back and take the lead. The Spirit made one last effort to take the win but were unsuccessful in completing the comeback. The Redhawks held off any last efforts from the Spirit and won the game 76-69.
The Redhawks were led by senior Heavyn Jordan who finished with 22 points, 4 rebounds, 1 block, and 3 steals. Senior Allie Coldwell finished with 13 points, 7 rebounds, 1 block, and 2 steals. Senior Theresa Gutierrez played an important role directing the offense putting up 7 points, 5 assists, 4 steals, and 4 rebounds. Nyah Henderson and Elise Young tallied 11 and 10 points, respectively. Henderson also tacked on 7 rebounds while Young added 6, 4 defensive and 2 offensive.
The Redhawks shot 51.8% from the field, 61.1% from the free throw line, and had 16 assists on 29 made field goals. The RedHawks held the Spirit to 26.75% from the field, 17.4% from beyond the arc, and controlled the glass on both ends, outrebounding the Spirit 43 to 41.
UP NEXT
The Redhawks will head to Utah for two exhibition matches against Southern Utah and Utah Tech. The first game will be against Southern Utah on Nov. 9th and then face off against Utah Tech on Nov. 10th.
