Benedictine Mesa's postseason run came to an end Saturday in the GSAC Semifinals, as the Redhawks fought through early momentum, foul trouble, and a high-powered Hope International offense in an 81–56 loss.
First Quarter
Benedictine opened the game with confidence, striking quickly as
Olivia Arvallo scored on back-to-back drives and set the tone defensively with an early steal. A crisp mid-range jumper from
Naomi Elliott and solid rebounding from
Shyla Moore and
Alannah Northam pushed the Redhawks to a 6–2 advantage.
The opening minutes showcased Benedictine's best traits—tough defense, quick ball movement, and assertiveness in transition.
Hope International responded with perimeter shooting to claim the lead, but the Redhawks continued to generate quality looks. Arvallo remained aggressive, Moore kept possessions alive on the glass, and Elliott added another clean jumper. Even as HIU hit tough shots, Benedictine continued to match their energy.
A late quarter layup by
Leanna Lepe stopped a Hope run, but the Royals closed the first on a deep three to send the Redhawks into the second trailing 16–9.
Second Quarter
Despite Hope International making a major surge in the second quarter, Benedictine continued to battle.
The highlight came from
Naomi Elliott, who buried
three three-pointers in the period—each arriving at key moments to stop HIU runs and keep the Redhawks within striking distance. Arvallo added another strong finish, and Northam powered in a putback after securing an offensive rebound.
While turnovers and Hope's transition attack created separation, Benedictine stayed composed, cutting the margin multiple times before heading into halftime down 40–27.
Third Quarter
Benedictine opened the second half aggressively on both ends. Northam converted inside, Elliott added free throws, and Nowell cleaned up offensive boards to generate second-chance points.
Defensively, the Redhawks forced several Hope miscues—highlighted by Elliott jumping a passing lane for a steal and assist on a Nowell layup. Arvallo added a pair of free throws, but Hope's size and rebounding helped hold off Benedictine's pushes.
A deep Elliott three at the buzzer kept the Redhawks within reach at 48–39 heading into the fourth.
Fourth Quarter
Even as Hope International's offense caught fire from deep, Benedictine refused to let the semifinal slip quietly away.
Arvallo delivered one of her strongest quarters of the season—knocking down a three, scoring through contact for an and-one, and continuing to attack the paint.
Deja Lynch and
Angelique Moreno provided energy on the boards, while Lepe and Nowell carved out second-chance opportunities.
But Hope's hot shooting proved too much to overcome, as the Royals outscored Benedictine in the final period to secure the win.
The loss brings the Redhawks' season to a close, but it was an exciting and historic campaign—one the entire program can be proud of.
