RedHawks fall to La Sierra in tight game

MESA, Ariz. – The Benedictine University women's basketball team dropped their Friday afternoon contest to the Golden Eagles of La Sierra University. The Redhawks are now 1-6 overall and 0-2 in Cal Pac play.

 

The first half of the game was tightly contested with both teams going back and forth with the lead playing clean. Both teams were struggling to be dominant offensively but in the Second quarter, Raeneasha Willis picked up the pressure on defense grabbing two steals and two rebounds. Willis finished the game with 6 steals, 6 assists and 6 points. 

The third quarter started off hot with both teams applying pressure. The Redhawks forced six turnovers in two and a half minutes. BenU outscored La Sierra 19-11 in the third quarter and ended with a 4-point lead. 

Sharon Preci continued to be a dynamic player for the Redhawks putting pressure on La Sierra's offense and making things easy for BenU's offense by finishing the game with 4 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists. 

Theresa Gutierrez had an outstanding night offensively with 22 points, 3 assists and 3 steals giving the Redhawks more opportunities to score. Heavyn Jordan stayed consistent with 12 points and 3 rebounds. Dyamond Butler-Worley added 15 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals in the game.

The Redhawks netted more points from the field than the Golden Eagles but gave up 17 points to La Sierra at the free throw line. Despite playing better in the paint and forcing 27 turnovers, the Redhawks needed to stay out of foul trouble finishing the game with 22 fouls compared to La Sierra's 14 fouls.

The Redhawks will face the University of Antelope Valley on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. inside of the Coyote Center.
