Redhawks Defeated In Tight Games Against Nor Cal Opponents

VS. UC MERCED

 

The Benedictine University Mesa women's basketball team suffered a narrow 66-62 loss on the road to UC Merced at the Joseph Edward Gallo Recreation Center on Thursday evening. 

The Redhawks started off strong in the first quarter finishing 20-19 but struggled to keep up with the Bobcats during the second and third quarters. The Redhawks came back in the fourth quarter outscoring the Bobcats 18-14, with Theresa Gutierrez chipping in 12 of those 18 points. By the end of the game, BenU's comeback fell short of four.

It was the first time Phoenix native Dyamond Butler-Worley has managed a double-double of her sophomore season when she scored 21 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Heavyn Jordan was productive on offense with 8 points and 6 rebounds. During the game, Boo Zeller played a key role for the Redhawks with 2 steals, 3 assists, and 4 rebounds, enabling the team to remain competitive throughout the game.

  

VS. SIMPSON UNIVERSITY

Despite another strong performance from Dyamond Butler-Worley and two 12-point scorers, the Redhawks fell to Simpson, 61-59, Friday night in Redding, Calif.

Butler-Worley posted 17 points on 7-of-16 shooting and 3-of-6 marksmanship from downtown. Nyah Henderson complimented Butler-Worleys performance with solid paint play going 6-for-9 to finish with 12 points. Heavyn Jordan added 12 points as well as 7 rebounds and 2 assists. Raenesha Willis had 3 rebounds. 4 steals, 4 assists, and just 5 points.

Simpson started the first quarter making 9-of-14 uncontested shots from the field. The Redhawks also gave 5 tunrovers in the first quarter which resulted in points for Simpson. The second quarter went int favor of the Redhawks with four of the five starters putting points on the board. Heavyn Jordan broke through the Simpson defense to put up 7 points but was unable to tie up the game ending the third quarter at 49-50. Butler-Worley put up 8 points, 1 rebound and 1 steal for the last effort to take the win but came up just two points shy.

The Redhawks will be back home this Friday December 9th against La Sierra University in the Coyote center. Tip off is set for 12pm.
