The boys' basketball program at local Chandler Seton Catholic Preparatory has deep ties to Benedictine University Mesa basketball. First year head coach Carter Aby, a 2019 graduate is joined on staff by fellow Benedictine alumni Ernie Kornya and Tommy Lease.

Coach Aby led the Sentinels to a very successful season with a 15-13 record and 3rd place finish in the tough 4A Desert Sky Region. For his efforts Coach Aby was named the 2022-23 Desert Sky Region Coach of the Year. The 15 wins equaled the most in 4 years and a 12-game improvement from the previous season.

"As a Benedictine alumni and former player, I believe in hard work and commitment to your team," says Aby. "My time as a player taught me the value of family and motivated me to pursue my dream as a basketball coach. I began chasing this dream when Benedictine alum, Terry Licht, hired me as the head basketball coach."

Aby was a 3-year member of the Benedictine Mesa men's basketball team. Over the course of those three season's Aby played in 85 career games and still holds program records for career rebounds (545) and blocks (93). As a junior Aby scored a near triple double with 7 points, 9 assists, 22 rebounds and 3 blocks in a 91-71 win over SAGU.

Aby is joined on staff by fellow Redhawk men's basketball alumni Ernie Kornya '19 and Tommy Liesse '19 who both serve as assistant coaches. "Benedictine ties run deep at Seton, and I am blessed to be the head coach of Seton surrounded by my Benedictine brothers," says Aby. Kornya was a 4-year player for the Redhawks and Liesse served two seasons as a student assistant coach.

Seton Catholic Preparatory has additional ties to Benedictine University as Assistant Director of Athletics Terry Licht served as the Mesa campus Sports Information Director for five years. Licht is also an alumni of Benedictine University and played four years of basketball at the main campus in Lisle, Illinois.
