Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Wins first Two Games of the Season.

The Benedictine Mesa Baseball team notched two victories today in the Coach Calderone Invitational. In the first game against Oklahoma Panhandle State University, BenU emerged triumphant after 13 innings with a final score of 10-9. The second game of the day against Olivet Nazarene University saw the Redhawks securing a 7-2 win.

In the match against Oklahoma Panhandle, BenU took an early lead in the 2nd inning with Bauler's double bringing Jowaiszas home. Sortino's single in the same inning allowed Bauler to score. Despite Panhandle scoring 5 runs in the fourth inning, the Redhawks responded with 4 runs of their own. Jowaiszas' single brought Bangs home, followed by Jowaiszas and Bauler scoring on Sortino's triple. In the 5th inning, Bangs hit a homerun, allowing him and Curran to score. Panhandle retaliated with a homerun in the 8th, and in the 9th, they secured a home run, scoring three runs. However, BenU managed to stay in the game, thanks to Jowaiszas' sacrifice fly that allowed Bangs to score. The intense match concluded in the 13th inning with Curran's homerun, clinching the victory for Benedictine.

The Redhawks started strong in the 1st inning of the second game, with Bangs delivering a double that helped Parra score. Jowaiszas followed with a single to bring Bangs home. In the 3rd inning, Santos hit a homerun, scoring himself and Parra. In the 4th inning, Parra's sacrifice fly to right field allowed Sortino to score. Olivet managed a run in the 5th through a sacrifice fly. Benedictine responded with Sortino's single in the 5th, bringing Jowaiszas home. In the 6th, Parra's double brought Fenner home, concluding BenU's scoring for the day. Olivet added a single run in the 8th, but Benedictine secured their second win of the day.

These victories marked the first for the team under new head coach Joe Silva, making the moment especially significant for Silva's debut as a head coach. The team will return to their home field on Wednesday night at Gene Autry, facing St. Thomas University at 6 pm.
