Benedictine Mesa is excited to announce Matt August as the new Head Coach of Men's Volleyball. Matt brings with him an impressive playing resume and coaching experience with top-tier collegiate teams to the Redhawk program.
 
Expressing his enthusiasm, Matt stated, "I am beyond excited to join the Benedictine family to help lead this amazing group of student-athletes. I am ready to help grow this sport more in the valley and create a culture that young student athletes want to be a part of. This program knows what it takes to succeed, and I am eager to lead the Redhawks to the top of NAIA Men's Volleyball once again.  I want to say thank you to everyone at the athletic department and Charlie Averkamp for giving me this opportunity to lead this program to new heights." 
 
A Southern California native, Matt started playing volleyball at an early age and played collegiately at Irvine Valley College and UC Irvine. He spent two summers with the USA National Team, earning a silver medal at the 2019 NORCECA Championships. Matt also played professionally for two seasons in the Czech Republic and one season in India.
 
Matt began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant with the University of Denver women's volleyball team, later becoming the first assistant for Grand Canyon University's men's volleyball team. At GCU, he helped lead the Lopes to two straight NCAA tournament appearances, including one Final Four appearance, with an overall record of 48-13 during his tenure.
 
Athletic Director Charlie Averkamp expressed the program's excitement, stating, "I am excited to welcome Matthew August as our new Head Men's Volleyball coach. Matthew comes from NCAA Division 1 Grand Canyon University and is fresh off a historic season with their men's team. His experience at the Division 1 level as well as playing professionally overseas will be invaluable to the current players and future Redhawks men's volleyball teams. His experience spoke for itself, but it was the attention and focus on the relationships created through sport that separated Matthew and made him the ideal candidate for our program! Redhawks men's volleyball is in great hands with Matthew August!"
 
The entire Benedictine Mesa community is eager to see the amazing things Matt will achieve with the team in the 2025 Spring season.
