Baseball Defeats Dickinson State With 8th Inning Comeback

The Benedictine Mesa Baseball team secured a thrilling comeback victory against Dickinson State on Wednesday night, winning 8-7 after overcoming an early deficit.

The Redhawks struck first in the opening inning when Jacob Bauler singled to drive in Carlos Parra. However, Dickinson State quickly responded in the second inning, tying the game with an RBI single from Santiago, Jr., followed by a two-run double from Braaten to take a 3-1 lead. Benedictine Mesa countered in the bottom half of the inning as Alec Larson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, allowing Sam Ruchala to score. Shortly after, Parra's sacrifice fly brought in Jack Moore, evening the score at 3-3.

Dickinson State surged ahead again in the third inning, scoring three runs on RBI hits from  Farwell, Erickson, and Santiago, Jr., making it 6-3. In the sixth inning, they extended their lead to 7-3 after an error allowed another run to score. Benedictine Mesa began to chip away in the bottom of the sixth when Carlos Parra doubled in Alec Larson, narrowing the deficit to 7-4. The momentum continued into the seventh as Sam Ruchala singled to center, bringing in Ben Schnuman to cut the deficit to two runs.

The Redhawks completed their comeback in the eighth inning. Ben Schnuman's infield single scored Alec Larson, making it a one-run game. Moments later, Joe Cosenza delivered the game-winning blow with a clutch two-run double to right field, bringing home Jacob Bauler and Tyler Jackson to give Benedictine Mesa an 8-7 lead. Their bullpen held firm in the ninth inning to secure the victory.
