The Benedictine University Mesa men's soccer team suffered a 2-0 setback to La Sierra on Thursday night in GSAC action.
Benedictine controlled much of the offensive play throughout the evening, out shooting La Sierra 17-12 and holding a 8-5 advantage in corner kicks. The Redhawks generated nine shots on goal, but were unable to break through against the Golden Eagles' defense and goalkeeping unit.
The opening half featured opportunities on both ends as Benedictine tested the La Sierra goalkeeper early. Pol Bistue, Shay Carey, RyderSkolka, and Abel Bello all put shots on target, while goalkeeper Charlie Shepherd recorded five first-half saves to keep the match scoreless heading into halftime.
La Sierra broke the deadlock just over two minutes into the second half, taking advantage of an own goal in the 48th minute to grab a 1-0 lead. The Golden Eagles doubled their advantage less than six minutes later when Damian Jimenez finished a scoring chance off an assist from Adrian Navarro.
The Redhawks continued to push forward in search of a response. Andronikos Nicolaou, Franco Marambio, and Pol Bistue each challenged the La Sierra defense, but the Golden Eagles maintained the clean sheet.
