Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Men's Volleyball Sweeps Arizona Christian in Three-Set Victory

The Benedictine Mesa men's volleyball team delivered one of its most complete performances of the season, earning a straight-set victory over Arizona Christian behind dominant blocking, terminal attacking, and steady execution in the clutch.

Set 1:
The opening set was a back-and-forth battle featuring long rallies and momentum swings. After falling behind early, Benedictine settled in when Travis Kelly and John Jakaitis combined for a block to give the Redhawks a 2–1 lead. From there, Benedictine's defense at the net became the early story—multiple block touches and forced attack errors allowed the Redhawks to keep a small cushion.

A strong serving stretch from Carson Lee, including back-to-back points off ACU miscues, pushed Benedictine ahead 6–3. The Firestorm responded, tying the set at 9–9, but the Redhawks once again countered with kills from Tucker CunninghamJoseph Washington, and Travis Kelly, building a 15–12 advantage.

After Arizona Christian called timeout, Benedictine continued its surge. Cunningham's block on Joshua Case and a service error by ACU extended the lead to 18–14. Despite a late Firestorm rally that cut the margin to 24–23, the Redhawks remained composed. A kill from Jakaitis to Kelly set up set point, and after a tight exchange, Washington buried the final ball to secure a 27–25 opening-set victory.

Set 2:
Benedictine rolled into the second set with confidence. Cunningham opened the scoring run with a kill, followed by a service ace that gave the Redhawks a 4–1 lead. The front line continued to frustrate ACU hitters, with Kelly and O'Brien combining for another block to keep Benedictine ahead.

Arizona Christian attempted to claw back, but Benedictine's offense was nearly unstoppable in transition. WashingtonRussel, and Cunningham each tallied kills as the Redhawks extended their advantage to 12–9. After an ACU timeout, Benedictine delivered its most dominant stretch of the match—five straight points highlighted by a Russel service ace, a Washington block, and back-to-back attack errors forced by the Redhawks' pressure at the net.

Washington continued to apply heat from the middle, and O'Brien added another kill to push the score to 23–13. ACU mounted a brief run, but the Redhawks closed the set with poise. A kill from Jakaitis ended the frame, giving Benedictine a convincing 25–18 win and a 2–0 match lead.
Set 3:
With momentum fully on their side, Benedictine opened the third set on a 4–1 run behind kills from RusselCunningham, and O'Brien. A Carson Lee service ace pushed the lead to 6–3 and solidified the Redhawks' control.

Arizona Christian struggled to find offensive rhythm as Benedictine's block and back-row defense repeatedly shut down attacks. O'Brien, Russel, and Washington each contributed kills during an 8–4 run that grew the lead to 11–7.

After ACU called timeout, the Redhawks only tightened their hold. O'Brien delivered a kill followed by a service ace, and Washington added two more points with a kill and a block to stretch the advantage to 18–11.

From there, Benedictine closed out the match with clinical execution. A kill from Cunningham, another from Washington, and a final swing by Jakaitis sealed the dominant 25–16 set win and the 3–0 sweep.
