Benedictine delivered a strong all-around performance Tuesday night, sweeping Park-Gilbert in straight sets,
25-23, 25-14, 25-15, behind balanced scoring and solid defensive play at the net.
Set 1:
Benedictine jumped out early in the opening set, sparked by kills from
Travis Kelly,
John Jakaitis, and
Ethan Russel. Park-Gilbert battled back midway through the frame behind the play of
Azzlyn Potts and
Dominic Smith, eventually taking a brief lead late.
The closing moments featured key blocks and clutch swings.
Joseph Washington and
Tucker Cunningham combined for critical touches at the net, while
Chase Jensen delivered an important kill to stop Park-Gilbert's momentum. Benedictine sealed the set after forcing consecutive Park-Gilbert attacking errors to win 25-23.
Set 2:
The second set belonged to Benedictine from the outset. Strong serving pressure and clean ball movement allowed the Redhawks to build an early cushion.
Chase Jensen and
Ethan Russel were particularly effective offensively, while
John Jakaitis controlled the match from the service line, recording multiple service aces.
Benedictine went on an extended scoring run midway through the set, capitalizing on Park-Gilbert errors and converting in transition. A final kill from
Travis Kelly closed out the dominant 25-14 set victory.
Set 3:
Benedictine carried its momentum into the third set, opening with a quick scoring run fueled by an ace and several well-placed kills from
Jakaitis and
Russel. The defense stepped up as well, with multiple blocks disrupting Park-Gilbert's hitters.
Despite continued effort from Park-Gilbert, including points from
Potts and
Matt Kendler, Benedictine's depth proved too much.
Tucker Cunningham converted several key opportunities late, and a final kill by
Chase Jensen sealed the 25-15 set and the straight-set victory.
