The Benedictine Mesa men's soccer team overcame an early deficit Thursday night, scoring twice in the first half to earn a 2-1 GSAC road victory over Soka at The Den. The win improved the Redhawks to 3-1-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
Soka struck quickly, finding the back of the net just 13 seconds into the match when Aidan Sandoval converted the opening goal off an assist from Mateus Seiki Rosa.
The Redhawks settled in and began controlling the match, creating chances through Shay Carey and earning several corner kicks. Their persistence paid off in the 20th minute when Ryder Skolka found the equalizer to level the match at 1-1.
Benedictine continued to apply pressure throughout the remainder of the first half and broke through again in the final minute before halftime. Pol Bistue scored in the 44th minute, giving the Redhawks a 2-1 advantage heading into the break. The goal proved to be the game-winner.
The second half featured a disciplined defensive effort from Benedictine, which limited Soka to just two shots after halftime. GoalkeeperCharlie Shepherd came up with key saves on attempts by Alex Soriano and Aidan Sandoval as the Redhawks protected their lead.
Benedictine nearly added insurance late in the match, generating several quality opportunities. Abel Bello, who led the team with three shots on goal, forced multiple saves from Soka goalkeeper Jacob Warren, while Carey also tested the Lions' defense throughout the night.
The Redhawks finished with a commanding 17-4 advantage in total shots and a 7-3 edge in shots on goal while recording four corner kicks. Shepherd earned the win in goal with two saves. Bistue and Skolka accounted for Benedictine's two goals, helping the Redhawks secure their second conference victory of the season.
