HONOLULU, Hawaii – The Benedictine University Mesa women's volleyball team started their second day of the Magic Island Classic with a sweep over Oregon Tech. The Redhawks are now 5-0 overall and have one more match before they head back to Arizona.
The Redhawks got on the board first forcing an attack error from the Owls. The set went back and forth until the Redhawks broke away to get their largest lead at 16-11. The Redhawks kept the pressure on the Owls forcing nine errors on 43 attempts while only allowing eight kills. BenU had 13 kills with five errors in 39 attempts for .205 hitting percentage. The Redhawks took the set, 25-18.
The second set started off with both teams exchanging the lead until the Owls took a three-point lead at the 14-11 mark. The Redhawks bounced back on two kills from
Kylie Bartel and a kill from
Jewel Carling to tie the game 14-14 before going on a 6-1 run for a five-point lead. Oregon Tech started the set hitting around .500 for most of it but fell to finish at a .273 hitting percentage. The Redhawks went from hitting at around .300 at the 14-14 mark to hitting .405 at the end of the set. BenU took the set, 25-20
Oregon Tech started set three with a 5-1 run before giving up a service error to BenU. The Redhawks would narrow the Owls lead twice before finally tying the game at 16-16 and taking the lead. The Redhawks took set two, 25-20.
Freshman
Jewel Carling finished with a .667 hitting percentage totaling 8 kills.
Kylie Bartel led the team in kills with 16 while
Brianna Rivera added 13 kills on the match.
Annika Wallace directed the offense with 21 assists.
Karson Davis added 16 assists and six digs.
