PRESCOTT, Ariz. – The Benedictine University Mesa women's volleyball team defeated Embry-Riddle on Friday afternoon, 3-2 (21-25,25-21,17-25,25-20,20-18) in a five-set thriller to upset the Eagles at home. The Redhawks improve to 13- overall and 6-1 in Cal Pac play.
The Eagles quickly took a ten-point lead over the Redhawks and held control over the first set despite being outhit by BenU with .308 clip to their .242 hitting percentage. The set was decided by the five service aces against the Redhawks. BenU bounced back and took set two totaling 13 kills while ERAU only had 9 and made nine errors.
The third and fourth sets went much like the first two for the match to end up 2-2 forcing a fifth set. The fifth was within reach for the Redhawks until
Brianna Rivera tied the game at the 15-15-point mark on a set from
Annika Wallace. BenU broke away with the narrow lead only to give it right back to the Eagles. The two teams exchanged leads one more time and BenU held onto it for the 20-18 win.
Brianna Rivera and
Kylie Bartel led the team with 16 and 15 kills, respectively. Rivera hit for a .317 clip with 41 attempts in the match while Bartel had 48 attempts to lead the Redhawks.
Courtney Ely landed 11 kills and a .450 clip on the match. Freshman
Jewel Carling led the team in blocks with three block assists.
Hattie Patton had a team high 14 digs and
Karson Davis led the team with 24 assists.
