The Benedictine Mesa Baseball team faced a tough matchup on Saturday evening, falling 1-11 to #19 Taylor University.
Taylor jumped ahead early, taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning. After a flyout and a strikeout, David reached on an error, stole second, and scored on Manning's RBI single. Moments later, Frickel's single brought in Manning for a strong start by the Trojans. The Redhawks couldn't respond offensively, going three up, three down in the bottom of the inning.
In the second inning, Taylor continued to apply pressure. A single by Sommer, followed by a walk from David, set up Gladd's two-RBI triple to left field, extending Taylor's lead to 4-0. Benedictine struggled to generate momentum at the plate, drawing just one walk in the inning.
Taylor's offense quieted in the third, but the Redhawks also failed to capitalize after registering their first hit. The fourth inning saw Taylor add another run as Kolpien scored on a double by Gladd, increasing the lead to 5-0. Benedictine threatened with the bases loaded in their half of the inning but failed to convert, leaving the deficit intact.
The Redhawks showed flashes of brilliance in the fifth inning with a rare defensive highlight: a triple play involving the left fielder and catcher. Offensively, Benedictine broke through when
Preston Vine-Close, pinch-running for
Jose Romero, crossed the plate on a single by
Carlos Parra, cutting the lead to 5-1. Unfortunately, a double play quickly ended any hopes of a rally.
Taylor extended their lead to 6-1 in the sixth inning with an RBI triple from Manning. Benedictine's bats remained quiet, as they were retired in order in their half of the inning.
The eighth inning was the deciding factor, as Taylor exploded for five more runs, pushing the Trojans' lead to 11-1. Despite efforts from the Redhawks, they couldn't generate offense in the bottom of the eighth, sealing the game for Taylor.
