Softball Drops Doubleheader to Park-Gilbert

The Benedictine Mesa softball team fell short against Park-Gilbert, dropping game one 4-2 and game two 5-1.

Game 1 Recap
The Redhawks struck first in the opening inning when G. Perez singled to left field, bringing B. Ayala home for an early 1-0 lead. Park-Gilbert quickly responded, tying the game at 1-1 after L. Romero scored on a passed ball. Benedictine regained the lead in the third when G. Perez delivered an RBI double to center field, allowing A. Jenkins to score and make it 2-1. However, Park-Gilbert took control in the later innings. C. Olivas tied the game in the fourth with an RBI double down the left-field line, scoring S. Romero. In the fifth, A. Castro tripled down the left-field line, bringing in V. Perez, followed by an L. Sanchez RBI single that plated A. Castro, sealing a 4-2 victory for Park-Gilbert. Despite a strong start, Benedictine was unable to rally late.

Game 2 Recap
Benedictine once again grabbed an early lead in the third when G. Perez singled to center, scoring B. Ayala for a 1-0advantage. Park-Gilbert answered in the fifth as I. Rivera hit a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing V. Perez to score and tie the game at 1-1. Moments later, A. Castro delivered a momentum-shifting three-run homer, bringing in L. Romeroand N. Gumm (all unearned) to push Park-Gilbert ahead 4-1. They added another run in the sixth when L. Romerosingled to left, driving in M. Lackey for an insurance run. Benedictine was unable to respond, falling 5-1 as Park-Gilbert secured the sweep.

The Redhawks will look to bounce back as they take on Park-Gilbert again on the road Saturday, March 22.
