Benedictine Mesa, took down Hope International in four sets behind dominant blocking, efficient attacking, and late-set poise. The Redhawks claimed the match
25–20, 23–25, 29–27, 25–12 to secure a statement win on the road.
SET 1 –
Benedictine opened the match with immediate authority.
A kill from
Chase Jensen, followed by a service error drawn from HIU, put the Redhawks in control early. Benedictine turned that momentum into a 5–1 advantage behind relentless pressure at the net, including a trio of blocks from
Travis Kelly,
Jensen, and
Tucker Cunningham.
The Redhawks' offensive rhythm flowed through setter
John Jakaitis, who repeatedly found Kelly for key kills and fed
Raphael Mkpegue for a well-timed strike to push the lead to 10–4.
HIU briefly cut the margin, but Benedictine kept firm control. Kelly, Cunningham, and
Ryder Kelley all contributed to an efficient 20–13 stretch. Jensen then capped the opening frame with a service ace to seal the 25–20 win.
SET 2 –
Set 2 turned into a tight back-and-forth battle.
HIU took an early 4–1 lead before Kelly responded with another kill from Jakaitis. Cunningham and Mkpegue kept the Redhawks close, trimming the deficit to 7–5 and later 11–8.
However, the Royals managed a small run to create separation at 16–11.
Benedictine answered with its own run — kills by Cunningham, Mkpegue, and
Ryder Kelley powered a late rally that brought the Redhawks within one at
24–23.
Despite the surge, HIU earned the final sideout, evening the match at one set apiece.
SET 3 –
The third set was the turning point of the afternoon.
HIU stormed ahead 4–0, but Benedictine slammed back with kills from
Ryder Kelley,
Cunningham, and
Mkpegue to cut the deficit to 4–3.
Cunningham then stepped behind the service line and lit up the stat sheet — delivering
three consecutive points, including
two service aces, to tie the set at 10–10.
Benedictine took its first lead at 11–10 on a Mkpegue putaway.
From there, the set turned into a heavyweight bout of sideouts. The Redhawks surged to an 18–14 lead after a huge block from
Ryder Kelley and Mkpegue, but HIU countered and tied the frame at 22–22.
Benedictine reached set point at
24–22 after a
Maurice O'Brien kill, but HIU refused to go away, tying it again and later making it 26–26 and 27–27.
Finally, a kill from
Maurice O'Brien followed by an attack error closed out the marathon set
29–27, giving Benedictine a crucial 2–1 match lead.
SET 4 –
The Redhawks smelled blood in the water and played their cleanest volleyball of the afternoon in Set 4.
Maurice O'Brien took over early, dealing two service aces and assisting on a kill from
Ryder Kelley to build a 5–1 lead. Cunningham hammered home another kill, and blocks from Kelly and O'Brien pushed it to 9–4.
The Redhawks' block became overwhelming.
Kelly, Cunningham, O'Brien, and Mkpegue rejected multiple HIU attacks, sparking a massive run that ballooned the lead to 17–8.
From there, Benedictine closed the door with a 7–2 finishing burst, highlighted by a pair of highlight-reel kills from O'Brien and Cunningham.
Mkpegue delivered the final blow with a kill off a Jakaitis set, punctuating an emphatic
25–12 set win and sealing the match.
