The Benedictine University Mesa baseball team put together multiple offensive surges and battled through extended innings, but ultimately dropped both games of a doubleheader to The Master's on Saturday.
Game 1: The Master's 16, Benedictine Mesa 14
The opener turned into an offensive showcase from both sides, highlighted by a massive second inning from Benedictine and multiple late-inning lead changes.
After The Master's plated a run in the top of the first, Benedictine responded with authority in the bottom of the second. The Redhawks sent 13 batters to the plate and erupted for
seven runs on eight hits, flipping the game in their favor.
Jonas Dyas drove in a run with a single,
Javier Rochin delivered a two-run double, and
Anthony Setticasi followed with a two-run single of his own. Benedictine added insurance on an RBI single from
Ben Schnurman and a sacrifice fly by
Oliver Davies to take a commanding 7–4 lead.
The Master's countered with a four-run third inning, but Benedictine continued to answer at the plate. In the bottom half of the third, Setticasi stayed hot with a two-run double, while
AJ Fernandez added an RBI single to keep the Redhawks within striking distance.
Benedictine reclaimed momentum in the fourth inning behind a rally sparked by Dyas' leadoff double. Rochin and Setticasi again delivered back-to-back RBI hits to put the Redhawks back in front, showcasing consistency at the heart of the lineup.
After quiet middle innings, Benedictine chipped away again in the sixth when
Christian Ramos doubled in a run, making it a one-run contest entering the late frames. However, The Master's broke through with a five-run seventh inning and added an insurance run in the ninth to pull away.
Game 2: The Master's 8, Benedictine Mesa 3
Game two opened with an early blow from The Master's, as a three-run home run in the first inning put Benedictine in an early hole. The Redhawks settled in quickly and began to put pressure on the Mustangs' pitching staff.
Benedictine responded in the bottom of the third with a strong rally.
Jonas Dyas,
Javier Rochin, and
Anthony Setticasi each singled to load the bases, and a hit-by-pitch to Schnurman brought in a run. Aggressive baserunning and passed balls allowed Benedictine to add two more runs, tying the game at 3–3 without a ball leaving the infield.
The Master's reclaimed the lead in the fourth and added runs in the seventh to create separation. Benedictine continued to battle offensively, collecting hits from Dyas, Rochin, Setticasi, and
Tyler Jackson, but was unable to mount a late comeback.
