Benedictine Mesa powered past Soka University of America in straight sets, winning 25–18, 25–15, 25–17 behind a balanced offensive attack and standout performances from multiple hitters. The Redhawks controlled the match from start to finish, using aggressive serving, strong block presence, and consistent offense to secure the sweep.
Set 1:
Both teams traded points early in the first frame, with neither side building more than a one-point advantage until Benedictine began to separate after an 8–7 lead. A kill from
Tucker Cunningham out of the timeout sparked a Redhawks run, followed by consecutive kills from
Travis Kelly and Cunningham to push the lead to 10–7.
Soka briefly tied the set at 10–10 behind a service ace from Jacob Marquez, but Benedictine responded with a dominant closing stretch. Cunningham caught fire late, registering multiple kills as the Redhawks won seven of the final eight points. A block from Kelly and
John Jakaitis brought up set point, and an Obergfell attack error sealed the 25–18 win.
Set 2:
The Redhawks came out hot in Set 2, jumping to a 6–2 lead thanks to kills from
Maurice O'Brien, Kelly, and
Jacob Saechao. After a Soka timeout, Benedictine continued to apply pressure, especially from the service line.
Blake Ross delivered three consecutive aces to extend the advantage to 16–9.
Travis Kelly and Cunningham continued pacing the offense, and O'Brien remained a force at the net with multiple kills and block touches. Benedictine closed the set 25–15, capped by another Kelly kill from Jakaitis, who quarterbacked the offense masterfully throughout the match.
Set 3:
Benedictine kept its foot on the gas in the third set, taking an early 4–2 lead behind kills from Cunningham and O'Brien. Despite a brief push from Soka that tied the set at 5–5, the Redhawks quickly regained momentum with kills from Saechao and Mkpegue.
A 5–1 Benedictine run—highlighted by kills from Cunningham, Kelly, and Saechao—forced a Soka timeout as the Redhawks stretched the lead to 13–9. Kelly then took over late in the frame, scoring from the service line with an ace and adding multiple kills to push the advantage to 18–10.
Cunningham delivered the final blow, putting down the match-winning kill to lock in the 25–17 set victory and the 3–0 sweep.
