Benedictine Mesa powered past Viterbo in a four-set match, taking a 3–1 victory behind a balanced offensive attack and strong serving runs that repeatedly shifted momentum.
Set 1:
Benedictine set the tone early, opening the match with a 3–0 run fueled by kills from
Travis Kelly and
Tucker Cunningham, plus a Viterbo attack error. Although Viterbo briefly steadied behind kills from Ethan Davis and Riley Connors, Benedictine seized control again with a dominant service run from
Carson Lee. His ace pushed the lead to 11–4, forcing Viterbo into its first timeout.
Despite a few bright moments — including solid swings from Styrk Myhre and Owen Collitt — Viterbo couldn't slow Benedictine's pin hitters. Cunningham,
Maurice O'Brien, and
Joseph Washington all contributed key kills as Benedictine pulled away for a 25–14 win.
Set 2:
Set two opened similarly to the first, with Benedictine jumping ahead 3–0, but Viterbo mounted a dramatic turnaround. After consecutive service aces and a string of attack errors forced by the V-Hawks' block, Viterbo surged to a 7–4 lead, capping the run with a Riley Connors kill and a solo block that energized the home bench.
Max Dugan delivered one of the set's defining stretches, scoring four straight points for Viterbo — two on attack errors he forced, plus a service ace — extending the lead to 12–9. Though Benedictine rallied behind O'Brien and Cunningham, Viterbo held its composure late. Logan Amdur's clutch kill made it 24–21, and a block by Collitt and Davis sealed the set, 25–22, tying the match at 1–1.
Set 3:
Ethan Davis opened the third set with back-to-back service aces, but the momentum didn't last. Benedictine quickly regrouped, using strong backcourt play and steady setting from
John Jakaitis to flip the score. A mid-set serving run from
Blake Ross and timely offense from Kelly, O'Brien, and Russel stretched the Benedictine lead to 15–11.
Viterbo fought back, trimming the deficit to 16–17 after a Daxton Marschall ace and two kills from Connors. But Benedictine answered with a decisive surge — highlighted by consecutive blocks from Washington and Jakaitis. A trio of late attack errors from Viterbo and a final
Carson Lee service ace closed out the set, 25–18, giving Benedictine a 2–1 match lead.
Set 4:
Viterbo opened the fourth set with renewed energy, taking a 4–3 lead after strong swings from Collitt and Myhre. But Benedictine responded with a steadying push led by O'Brien and Washington, who combined for multiple kills and blocks to reclaim the advantage.
As the set progressed, Benedictine's depth proved too much. Lee and O'Brien delivered key points off the bench, and Washington continued to dominate at the net. Though Viterbo closed within 17–20 after another ace from Marschall, Benedictine shut the door with a 5–2 finishing run. O'Brien's kill and final service ace clinched the match, 25–19.
