The Benedictine Mesa baseball team split Saturday's doubleheader against The Master's University, taking Game 1 with an impressive 11–7 win before falling 7–2 in Game 2.
Game 1 Recap
The Redhawks rallied from an early deficit to claim an 11–7 victory in a high-scoring opener. The Master's jumped out to a quick 3–0 lead in the first on a three-run homer by Brownell, but Benedictine responded in the second with a solo home run from
Oliver Davies to get on the board.
The Redhawks took control in the third, erupting for five runs behind a two-run double from
Tyler Jackson and a two-RBI single from
Jacob Bauler. Benedictine capitalized on a pair of Mustang errors in the inning to move ahead 6–3. The offense stayed hot in the fifth with an RBI infield single from
Alec Larson and a sacrifice fly by
AJ Fernandez to make it 7–3.
Willie Tatum scored on a wild pitch in the sixth to push the lead to 8–3. After The Master's added a run in the bottom half, the Redhawks answered again in the seventh when Fernandez scored on another wild pitch. The Master's made things interesting with a late three-run push, including a two-run homer in the seventh to pull within 9–7. But Fernandez put the game out of reach with a two-run shot to left-center in the ninth, securing the 11–7 win.
Game 2 Recap
In the second game, The Master's rode a consistent offensive effort to a 7–2 win. The Mustangs scored first in the opening inning and added another in the fourth to go up 2–0. Benedictine cut into the lead in the fifth with an RBI double from
Carlos Parra, scoring Willie Tatum to make it 2–1.
The Redhawks' momentum was short-lived as The Master's put up three runs in the bottom of the fifth and added two more in the sixth, including a two-run homer by Beck.
Alec Larson's solo home run in the sixth was the final run for Benedictine, as the Redhawks were held scoreless in the final three frames.
