Benedictine Mesa showed fight, timely hitting, and several strong individual performances, but Embry-Riddle capitalized on a handful of big innings to take both games of Friday's doubleheader.
GAME 1: Embry-Riddle 10, Benedictine Mesa 6
The Redhawks came out aggressive in the opener, putting runners on base in each of the first three innings. Benedictine had the best early scoring chance in the first when
Anthony Setticasi singled and advanced to third, but Embry-Riddle escaped the jam.
Benedictine continued applying pressure in the third.
AJ Fernandez singled and pinch-runner
Oliver Davies moved into scoring position, but another Redhawks rally was left on the bases.
After holding the Eagles scoreless through four innings, Benedictine ran into trouble in the bottom of the fifth, when Embry-Riddle strung together six hits and used an infield error to spark aÂ
six-run inning.
The Redhawks struck back in the sixth.
Jack Moore singled and later came home on a wild pitch, and
Javier Rochin delivered a ringing RBI double to center to make it 6–2.
Embry-Riddle extended its lead with three more in the sixth, but Benedictine refused to go quietly. In the eighth,
Tyson Treadgill singled and advanced on a wild pitch beforeÂ
Javier Rochin launched a two-run home run to left, cutting the deficit to 9–5. Moments later, Setticasi added an RBI single to make it 9–6. But the Eagles added one more run in the 8
th and took the game 10-6.
GAME 2: Embry-Riddle 15, Benedictine Mesa 5
Benedictine struck first once again in Game 2. After Setticasi singled and moved around the bases via a wild pitch and a passed ball,
Jack Moore brought him home on a fielder's choice to give the Redhawks a 1–0 lead.
The Redhawks continued to put runners on in the second, but stranded two. Embry-Riddle responded with a four-run inning and added a five-run burst in the third to take control.
Benedictine countered in the fourth with a strong offensive push.
Tyler Jackson singled and scored on Setticasi's RBI double to left, and Moore followed with another run-scoring single to trim the deficit to 9–3.
In the fifth,
Oliver Davies sparked the offense by doubling and stealing third before scoring on a passed ball. That sequence brought the game within 9–4, but Embry-Riddle responded with another six-run inning to extend the margin.
The Redhawks continued to grind at-bats in the sixth.
Samuel Ruchala was hit by a pitch, followed by another HBP for Schnurman and a walk to Davies.
Tyson Treadgill came through with a two-out RBI single to make it 15–5.
Despite creating traffic again in the seventh, Benedictine couldn't push more runs across as Embry-Riddle secured the doubleheader sweep.
