Redhawks Split Competitive Doubleheader with Nelson

The Benedictine University Mesa softball team delivered a strong showing on Tuesday, taking Game 1 with timely hitting and sharp defense before narrowly dropping Game 2 in a late-inning battle.

GAME 1 — Benedictine Mesa 3, Nelson 2
The Redhawks set the tone early in Game 1 and never relinquished control, securing a well-earned 3–2 victory behind a pivotal second inning and steady defense in crunch time.

Benedictine Mesa broke the scoreless tie in the top of the second when Jasleen Calderon and Mackenzie Larson opened the frame with back-to-back singles, eventually advancing on an errant throw. Chloe Wright then delivered a clutch two-run double to right field, giving the Redhawks the early 2–0 cushion. Moments later, Annaleia Jenkins extended the lead with a ringing RBI double to left-center, making it 3–0.

Nelson attempted a comeback with a two-run homer in the third, but the Redhawks' pitching and defense held firm from that point forward. Benedictine Mesa stranded five Nelson runners across the final four innings, refusing to allow the tying run to cross.

GAME 2 — Nelson 5, Benedictine Mesa 3
Game 2 brought another fast start for the Redhawks as they immediately grabbed a 1–0 lead. Olivia Chavez doubled in the opening inning, and Shayla Young followed with a single and stolen base. Leiana Madrazo brought home the game's first run with a productive groundout.

Despite the strong opening, Nelson capitalized on miscues in the bottom half to score twice and take a 2–1 advantage. Both teams traded scoreless frames through the middle innings as Benedictine Mesa continued to create opportunities on the bases.

In the seventh, the Redhawks made one last push. Alexa Rice drew a leadoff walk, and Annaleia Jenkins blasted an RBI double to the left-center gap to pull Benedictine Mesa within striking distance. Jacquelyn Morales added another RBI double moments later to make it 3-5. Morales tried to stretch it into a triple but was thrown out at third, ending the rally and the game.
