Benedictine Mesa softball delivered a complete team performance on Saturday, sweeping Embry-Riddle with a 13-5 victory in Game 1 and a 9–3 win in Game 2.
GAME 1:
The Redhawks set the tone early defensively, stranding two Eagle baserunners in the top of the first before striking quickly in the bottom half. After a walk and a stolen base by
Shayla Young helped load the bases with two outs,
Chloe Wright delivered the game's first big swing—a bases-clearing double to left that put the Redhawks ahead 3–0.
Embry-Riddle chipped away, scoring once in the second and twice more in the third to even the game at 3–3. But Benedictine refused to relinquish momentum. After a clean defensive inning, the Redhawks answered in the bottom of the fourth.
Emma Tufnell walked, and a hit-by-pitch to
Sarah Potter kept the inning alive before Young singled to center. A throwing error by the catcher allowed Tufnell to score, and moments later
Mackenzie Larson reached on an error in right field, bringing home two more unearned runs. Benedictine reclaimed a 6–4 lead and never trailed again.
Embry-Riddle closed the gap to 6–5 in the sixth, but that only set the stage for the Redhawks' biggest frame. In the bottom of the sixth, Benedictine erupted for
seven runs on five hits and a series of disciplined at-bats. Larson drove in a run with a single, Madrazo and Calderon drew back-to-back walks, and pinch-hitter
Alexandra Lopez was hit by a pitch to force home another. Wright, Rice, and Tufnell each followed with RBI hits, while Gabriel drew her second bases-loaded walk of the game. Young added one final RBI single before the inning and game ended, giving BenU a commanding 13–5 win.
GAME 2:
Game 2 featured a quieter start, with the Redhawks going down in order in the first inning before Embry-Riddle scratched across an unearned run in the second. Benedictine answered immediately. In the bottom of the second,
Leiana Madrazo singled and stole second, then scored on
Alexa Rice's RBI double to right field. Tufnell followed with an RBI double of her own to give the Redhawks a 2–1 lead.
In the third,
Negasse Williams and Young opened the inning with back-to-back singles, but Benedictine couldn't cash them in, leaving the score unchanged. Embry-Riddle tied the game in the fourth on a sacrifice fly, and after a triple and another sac fly in the fifth reclaimed a brief 3–2 lead. Once again, Benedictine responded with composure and firepower.
The Redhawks erupted in the bottom of the fifth, scoring
five runs to seize control. Larson reached on an error, Calderon and Madrazo singled, and Wright smashed a two-RBI double to center to put BenU back on top. Rice followed with a two-run triple to right, and Tufnell laid down a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt to bring her home, pushing the lead to 7–3.
BenU closed the door in the sixth with another strong offensive push. Williams singled, pinch hitter
Reaghann Ritz followed with another base hit, and Larson added a single to load the bases. After a fielder's choice erased two runners at the plate, Madrazo walked to reload them, and
Wright once again delivered, singling to left to drive in two more runs. With a 9–3 cushion, the Redhawks shut down the Eagles in the seventh with a clean 1-2-3 inning, securing the sweep on the day and splitting the series.
