The Benedictine University at Mesa softball team showed resilience and timely offense across both games of Saturday's doubleheader but came up just short in a pair of tightly contested losses to Arizona Christian, falling 6–4 in game one and 4–3 in game two.
Game 1: Arizona Christian 6, Benedictine Mesa 4
Arizona Christian jumped out to an early lead in the opener, capitalizing on patience at the plate and defensive miscues to score four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Benedictine settled in defensively after the early surge, limiting further damage and giving the offense time to respond.
The Redhawks got on the board in the second inning when
Leiana Madrazo singled up the middle, stole second, and later scored on an RBI single from
Alexa Rice, cutting the deficit to 4–1.
Benedictine's biggest response came in the fourth inning.
Jasleen Calderon led off with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch, and Madrazo followed with a walk and stolen base.
Chloe Wright delivered the momentum swing with a two-run double to right field, and an RBI groundout by
Emma Tufnell tied the game's flow and narrowed the score to 5–4.
Arizona Christian answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth, extending the lead back to two. Benedictine continued to threaten, stranding multiple runners in both the fifth and sixth innings. The Redhawks put pressure on late with hits from
Shayla Young,
Mackenzie Larson, and
Annaleia Jenkins, but were unable to find the tying run as Arizona Christian held on for the 6–4 win.
Game 2: Arizona Christian 4, Benedictine Mesa 3
Game two was another back-and-forth battle, highlighted by strong pitching and defensive play on both sides. After a scoreless first inning, Benedictine struck first in the second.
Emma Tufnell provided the spark with a solo home run down the left-field line, giving the Redhawks an early 1–0 lead.
Arizona Christian responded with two runs in the bottom of the second, but Benedictine answered once more in the third.
Jasleen Calderon singled and later scored on an RBI single through the left side by
Chloe Wright, evening the score at 2–2.
The host regained the lead in the bottom of the third with a pair of unearned runs, but Benedictine pitching and defense settled in from there. The Redhawks held Arizona Christian scoreless over the final three innings, including clean defensive frames in the fifth and sixth to set up a dramatic finish.
Down to their final inning, Benedictine mounted one more rally in the seventh.
Annaleia Jenkins led off with a single, and after back-to-back hits from Calderon and
Leiana Madrazo, the Redhawks plated a run to make it a one-run game. With the tying run on base, Benedictine continued to battle, but the comeback fell just short as Arizona Christian secured the 4–3 victory.
