Benedictine Mesa softball put runners on base, manufactured opportunities, and delivered a strong response in both games, but early big innings by OUAZ proved too much to overcome as the Redhawks dropped both ends of Saturday's doubleheader, falling 11–3 in Game One and 9–1 in Game Two.
GAME ONE:Â
OUAZ jumped out quickly in the opener, scoring five runs in the first inning behind three hits and a three-run homer. Benedictine settled defensively after the early surge, and relieverÂ
Alyssa Chavez helped stabilize the game by limiting the Spirit to one run in the second and retiring the side in order in the third.
The Redhawks' offense found life in the third.Â
Annaleia Jenkins opened the frame with a single and later stole second, whileÂ
Leiana Madrazo worked her second walk of the game to put two aboard. With two outs,Â
Jasleen Calderon delivered a clutch two-run single up the middle to put Benedictine on the board.Â
Olivia Chavez followed with a single of her own, andÂ
Emma Tufnell lined another RBI single to center to bring the Redhawks within 5–3.
Benedictine's momentum carried into the fourth, but a series of defensive miscues opened the door for OUAZ to score three unearned runs and regain control. The Spirit added two more in the fifth, and despite a single fromÂ
Mackenzie Larson and another stolen base—her second of the day—the Redhawks were unable to push across additional runs.
GAME TWO:Â
In the second game, the Redhawks once again showed offensive pressure in the early innings but struggled to break through against a fast-starting OUAZ lineup.
AfterÂ
Leiana Madrazo singled in the first, advanced on a passed ball, and stole third, Benedictine had a prime chance to take an early lead. But a foul-out stranded the runner, and OUAZ capitalized in the bottom half with three runs on four hits.
The Spirit added another run in the second before the Redhawks answered in the third.Â
Jenaly Gabriel walked, and Jenkins singled to place two on. After a walk to Young loaded the bases,Â
Madrazo lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, bringing Gabriel home and cutting the deficit to 4–1.
The Benedictine defense held OUAZ scoreless in the third and fourth, but the Spirit broke the game open in the fifth with a five-run inning, powered by a two-run homer and a two-run double.
